"...On the 16th of August, a night trip, a very dangerous night trip this one. This time to bomb Stettin. There was an indication that wherever possible, paddle bladed props were to be fitted and we hoped that by this time, ours would be, but it was not to be. However, this was to be the last trip before paddle bladed props were to be fitted. They gave a distinct advantage when gaining height. But, we had to go and do the job, so off we went to do it. We set out en route across the North Sea towards Denmark, across a bit of Norway, up to Sweden, at a very good height — above 20,000 feet I believe. Our route was to take us down Sweden and across the Baltic Sea to bomb this port of Stettin. Swedish fighters came up alongside us, not to attack us but to escort us and make sure we didn’t go any farther, and probably to help keep the German fighters from us. So, we crossed the Baltic Sea, and............." ( cd patrz link)

339 aircraft - 194 Lancasters, 134 Halifaxes, 11 Stirlings - ordered to attack Stettin. This raid, on a target more than 600 miles from England, proved to be the most successful attack beyond the range of Oboe during the Battle of the Ruhr. Visibility was good and the Pathfinder marking was carried out perfectly. 24 fires were still burning when a photographic reconnaissance aircraft flew over Stettin a day and a half later. 21 aircraft - 13 Lancasters, 7 Halifaxes, 1 Stirling - lost, 6.2 per cent of the force.

86 Stirlings were dispatched to attack the Heinkel factory near Rostock but a smoke-screen concealed this target and bombing was scattered. 8 Stirlings were lost.

11 Mosquitos carried out a raid to Berlin as a diversion for the forces attacking Stettin and Rostock; 18 Wellingtons were minelaying off Brittany ports and there were 3 OTU sorties. 1 Mosquito was lost from the Berlin raid.

Jeszcze ciekawostka:

http://www.unc.edu/~landon/combat.html

Monday - May 29, 1944 :
Was right waist gunner on own crew. Briefing at 4:30. Takeoff at 8 o'clock. Lot of flak on way to target and a lot over target. Hit about 30 JU-88s and ME-109s just before and after the IP. Lucky they didn't hit our ship. Chris (left waist gunner) and Stanley (tail gunner) put in a claim for a fighter each. The fight was plenty hot. We made a good hit on target. The target was an oil refinery at Stettin, Germany. Flying time: 8 hrs 15 min. On Oxygen 5 hrs 30 min. Temperature -20. Ship #287. Bomb load 10 500lb GP. Squadron lost 4 ships. A B24 was on top of us on the bombing run and we thought his bombs were going to hit us. They miss us by a hair. Target: Politz, Germany near Stettin.

As soon as dawn broke, somewhere around 5:00 AM, they took off for Politz, Germany to bomb the shipping harbor. According to John Forsyth, "It flew good. We didn't have any problems with it". This was my Dad's 29th mission.

Little did they realize that this was going to be their last mission together.

They took their "usual" 52 degrees 30 minutes N, a route which they referred to as the Lincoln Hwy. over the Zuider Zee, Doomer Lake south of Hannover, south of Berlin, turned north and were bombing the port of Stettin on the Baltic seaport just north of Berlin. ..."

Politz — attacked by No. 617 21 December 1945
===============================================================

http://www.jdsqrd.com/diary_1.html

6th Mission, June 20, 1944

We got up at one, we had hotcakes for breakfast. We went to briefing and were told to go way into, Germany and bomb a synthetic oil refinery at Politz. We took off at 4:45 and in the North Sea fighters hit us and knocked four or five B24's down behind us. The water was all ablaze with them. I didn't fire any. One ship started to make a pass at us, but Wood in the tail chased him away. We had lots of flack most of the way and there was about seventy-seven big guns over the target and you could hear the flack break all around us awfully close. We left the target flaming and smoking. Fifty percent of German oil was supposed to come from there.
We sure hit it. We flew 22000 feet. Temperature -20 C. Got back at 1:45. A long trip. I got a little frostbite on my right ear the last time. We carried forty 100-lb bombs. We now get the air medal, they say

MISSION NO. 133

POLITZ, POLAND

7 OCTOBER, 1944
The mission would be one that would long live in the history of the
Group. Although the synthetic oil plant at Politz, second largest of
its type in Germany, had been attacked several times, it was again
the target for the Group. The MPI assigned to the 457th was the
distillation plant, which had not yet sustained much damage.
Thirty-six aircraft made up the 94th A Combat Wing and twelve craft
composed the D composite box. Col. Luper flew as Air Commander and
Captain Fischer as pilot

As replacement, Ed was gunner/engineer. That meant he sat in the
little glass "bubble" at the top of the B-24. One night his crew
was part of a long run to bomb Politz on the Polish border. They
delivered but were hit in the wing while over the target and
loosing fuel. They had to shut down two engines, drop out of
formation and when they finally limped to the good old North Sea
(safety) their altitude was 2,000 feet.

Woodruff's bomber was one of five aircraft shot down and 38 others were damaged during the mission over Politz, according to the "History of the 457th Bombardment Group." During that mission and the five before it, 24 bombers in the 457th were shot down, 88 were damaged and 225 crewmen were killed or missing in action, including POWs, the 457th history said.

For its two missions on this date, the 392nd Bomb Group put up a total of
49 planes.  According to 392nd Bomb Group historian Col. Robert E. Vickers, Jr., this "maximum effort" was "a tribute to all ground maintenance, armament, ordnance and communications personnel of the Group's supporting organizations.  This type of outstanding effort on behalf of these mission support units was typical throughout the 392nd's combat operations and attributed directly to the successes achieved by the Group in all of its
(285) missions.  The 392nd because of this typical effort was always labelled--'a goin' outfit!' as its bombing record among all B-24 units attested."  (The Liberators from Wendling, p. 48)

Mission #116     Target: Politz

Again this rough target would be remembered, not only for the Group’s
heavy losses suffered from the raid of May 29th but from the many
casualties it would also absorb again on this day. The target once
more was the synthetic oil refinery and between 0100 and 0200 hours,
(33) aircrews were briefed. Lieutenant Crowell of the 579th was one
of the two primary Bombardiers while Lieutenant Robinson of the 576th
was the other. Two PFF lead ships were employed on this mission. All
(32) ships went over the target, but some malfunction in the lead PFF
ship caused the first squadron to release its bombs shortly after
leaving the IP. The other two squadrons hit the target with generally
fair results. In all, (812) 100# and 500# bombs were dropped in the
target areas. Problems on this mission were compounded with heavy
enemy aircraft reaction against the 14th Combat Wing formations
starting around 0920 hours, just before the target. An estimated
50-60 fighters of the JU-88 and ME-410 bomber/fighter type hit the
Group to some extent but the burden of their strikes was against the
492nd Group from North Pickenham, a sister 14th Combat Wing B-24
outfit. Flak once more was heavy over the target with (24) ships of
those returning picking up battle damage. Though little else was
known,(4) of the 392nd’s Liberators were listed as lost with their
crews MIA - all believed to have headed toward Sweden. From the 579th
in ship #135, Lieutenant W. M. Forsythe’s crew was heard to announce
over VHF "A" Channel after bombs away, position 5417N-1224E, that his
aircraft was headed in that direction and under control. In ship #343
of the 577th, Lieutenant C. L. Bell’s crew was last seen at 1015
hours, position 5417N-1224E, also heading on the same course under
control. From the 577th also, Lieutenant L. Page in aircraft #125 was
observed last, immediately after bombs away, heading toward Sweden
too - this being his second trip to this neutral country. From the
579th, ship #586 with Lieutenant W. A. Schafer was last seen at 1015,
position 5417N-1227E, also heading in that direction. The remaining
aircraft returned safely with Group gunners claiming (3) enemy
aircraft kills. The mission ships landed around 1345 hours with (4)
Liberators and their (40) crew personnel missing-in-action.

Combat Diary: S/Sgt Louis J. Torretta:

MISSION # 22 APRIL 11th 1944

TARGET POZNAN (POLAND)
BOMB LOAD 10 Demolition each 100 pounds.
BOMBING ALTITUDE 18,000 Ft.
TEMPERATURE 18 BELOW ZERO.

"Wow" what a ride today. Our target was an oil plant near Poznan Poland but again the weather was against us and we had to bomb the secondary target which was an air field (Arnimwalde/ Załom). It is located at Stettin in (Germany). It set out in the woods and we had a heck of a time finding it. When the Germans discovered what we were looking for they tried to hide it with a smoke screen and that just gave it away. We took off at 0530 o’clock and landed at 1700 – 11-1/2 hours. We were able to see the target very clear and we had a good score. We ran into some enemy fighters and we sort of took a beating. They were ME 110s, about 12 of them. We lost Lt Pauling’s crew #15. They were very good friends of mine.

Later we heard they were headed for Sweden. I hope they made it.

About three weeks later we heard they had landed on a small island which was occupied by the Germans. It was the small island of Bornholm just off Sweden. About one month later they came back to the field all dressed in civilian clothes. Five out of ten escaped to Sweden and they were returned to us. The other five were never heard from again. They were either killed or taken prisoners.

There is a rule that if American soldiers escape into Sweden or any neutral country they are to be returned to their respective country. But if they just make a forced landing or something to that affect they will be interned for the Duration.

No to coś w języku ojczystym:

Żródło: http://www.karsibor.com/

Pomnik lotników RAF

I jeszcze jedna kartka z historii, bliższa naszym czasom.
